چکیده

The leading causes of disease and death in the United States—coronary heart disease and cancer—are related to lifestyle factors. Changing eating and exercise habits and eliminating smoking could markedly reduce the prevalence of these diseases. The goal of this chapter is to provide readers with an overview of behavioral strategies that can be used to modify lifestyle behaviors. Although the behavioral principles are applicable to changing any type of health habit, this chapter will focus primarily on obesity and will review strategies that may help in both treating and preventing this disease.
